Our shared knowledge and expertise help our clients navigate the complexities of project cargo. In this latest KC In-Depth Q&A Interview, our Business Development Manager, Ewan Penman, part of our specialist cargo team, gives insight into project cargo.

Can you explain what project cargo is, Ewan and why it’s important?

Ewan Penman: Project cargo refers to the transportation of large, heavy, high-value, or complex pieces of equipment. For instance, it could be a massive turbine for a power plant, a drilling rig for an offshore oil project, or a prefabricated structure for a construction site. As the movement of this kind of cargo is extremely crucial and often complicated, it involves meticulous planning and specialised handling to ensure safe delivery. It’s cargo that can include components for industrial projects like oil and gas or key equipment for an event or concert, so keeping sectors, industries, and events running is often essential.

What are the main challenges associated with project cargo?

There are many, as it is a complex area of logistics. In the world of transportation, logistics is often very standardised when we think of containers and space, but project cargo is a unique and bespoke industry area.

Main challenges include:

  • Managing the logistics of oversized and heavy loads
  • Navigating regulatory requirements
  • Ensuring timely delivery despite potential disruptions
  • Coordinating multiple modes of transportation within an extremely limited timeframe
  • Ensuring safe transhipment with experienced carriers.

Each project has unique requirements, making flexibility and expertise essential.

Can you explain and detail the processes and structure at KC Group Shipping for managing project cargo logistics?

KC Group Shipping has a dedicated project cargo department. It’s essential to have people in-house who understand the complexities of project cargo logistics and the knowledge to navigate the challenges. From the outset, we learn about our client and the consignment and develop detailed planning and analysis of cargo specifications, timelines, and route requirements. Our approach includes bespoke solutions tailored to each project, leveraging our extensive network and cutting-edge technology. We offer end-to-end services, from route studies and risk assessments to real-time tracking and contingency planning. This personalised approach is a testament to our commitment to meeting the unique needs of every client and every consignment, ensuring all stakeholders, from clients to partners, including authorities, are integrated into the process.

How vital are route studies in project cargo, Ewan?

Route studies are critical to determine the safest and most efficient pathways for transporting oversized cargo. We consider geographical, political, and infrastructure factors to identify optimal routes, helping to mitigate risks and ensure smooth transit and timely delivery.

Are other agencies involved in project cargo shipments?

As we provide a turnkey service to clients, we often manage other agencies’ involvement in project cargo. These can sometimes be at the request of our clients or necessary elements for safe and seamless end-to-end delivery.

We obtain heavy haulage permits, coordinate with port authorities for vessel berthing and heavy lifts, and arrange secure indoor storage before a shipment's departure. Sometimes, a client may request a particular service, and recently, one client mandated Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) testing of all welds to ensure compliance with rigorous quality standards, adding another layer of complexity to that project. Additionally, the KC Project Cargo division manages all aspects, including arranging Police permits and coordinating escorts, managing logistical planning for road transport to and from ports, port handling, lift to ship and sea fastening, and through to customs clearance.

We ensure up-to-date and transparent communications between all parties when managing associated agencies and end-to-end project cargo solutions.

What modes of transport do you typically use for project cargo?

You can transport project cargo by sea, air, and land. Sea transport is ideal for heavy and oversized equipment, while air transport offers speed for time-sensitive deliveries. Land transport, including road and rail, is used for regional and continental shipments. We select the mode based on the cargo's size, weight, and destination.

At KC Group Shipping, we prioritise sustainability in every aspect of our operations, including project cargo. We carefully consider the carbon footprint of each mode of transport—whether by sea, air, or land. Our approach involves rigorous CO2 emission reporting to inform our customers about the environmental impact of their shipments. Additionally, our reporting data helps customers plan their carbon emissions offsetting, offering tailored solutions to minimise their environmental footprint and contribute to a greener future.

How does KC Group Shipping ensure compliance with international regulations?

Our dedicated customs management team navigates global trade regulations, ensuring compliance and streamlining clearance processes. Our AEO (Authorised Economic Operator) status, a globally recognised mark of quality, safety, and security, underscores our commitment to high compliance and security standards. We advise duty mitigation and ensure all necessary documentation is in order. Compliance is at our core. Our BeKC company culture and operational programme, with internal learning and development courses and processes, guidance and education, ensure every team member focuses on compliance at every project stage.

Does technology play a role in project cargo logistics, Ewan?

Using technology is an essential tool and a key driver in our project cargo logistics. We employ advanced planning tools for route optimisation, risk assessment, and real-time tracking. Our digital platforms ensure seamless communication with clients, providing transparency and updates throughout the cargo's journey. This technological edge allows us to deliver your cargo with precision and efficiency, keeping you informed every step of the way.

Like many organisations, KC has embraced a digital transformation, ensuring accessible and up-to-date information for our clients and teams. However, we also provide our clients with the benefit of the human touch, with experienced project cargo personnel available for conversations, keeping communication channels open and responsive.
