The Background

At KC Group Shipping (KC), we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional logistics solutions that align with our clients’ values. We take pride in building relationships with clients, understanding their goals and objectives and becoming integral to their operations. Recently, we had the privilege of partnering with Extreme E, a pioneering motorsport series dedicated to promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility. Extreme E is a radical off-road racing series, travelling to some of the most remote corners of the planet impacted by climate change. They bring awareness of global environmental challenges, whilst delivering exhilarating races in incredible locations.

The task set to the KC team by Extreme E - transport all the necessary equipment to Sanquhar, Scotland, for their Championship Race. Working in close partnership with Extreme E stakeholders, we developed a transportation plan showcasing our commitment and solutions for transport efficiency and eco-friendly logistics.

Project Overview

For the championship race, over 70 shipping containers, 10 specialised trailers, and a fleet of vehicles were to be transported from Portsmouth to Sanquhar and back after the race. The key challenge was executing this operation in the most environmentally friendly manner possible, in line with Extreme E’s core sustainability and carbon reduction values.

Challenge and Solution

Extreme E’s mission to minimise its environmental impact meant that traditional road transport was not the most viable option. They needed a solution to reduce carbon emissions and significantly align with their environmental ethos, presenting a unique challenge: how could we ensure the timely and efficient delivery of all equipment while adhering to stringent sustainability standards?

The KC Group Shipping project cargo team identified that a combined road and rail transport method would provide the optimal solution, dramatically reducing emissions compared to an all-road transport approach. By leveraging the commercial rail network, we could utilise electric rail for a significant portion of the journey, thereby minimising the carbon footprint.

Project Key Details:

  • Transport Mode: Combined Road and rail network.
  • Containers Transported: Over 70 shipping containers.
  • Specialised Trailers: 10 trailers.
  • Cargo: Multiple vehicles and equipment.
  • Route: Portsmouth to Sanquhar, and return.

Implementation

Our team meticulously planned and executed the logistics operation. Each shipping container was transferred from road transport to the rail network, ensuring that the majority of the journey was conducted via electric rail, reducing road congestion and cutting down emissions substantially.

Emission Savings: Using the combined transport method, we achieved an impressive emission saving of almost 34% compared to all-road transport.

Miles Removed from Road: The project removed nearly 50,000 miles from the UK road network.

CO2e Savings: The operation saved approximately 6,000 CO2e, aligning perfectly with Extreme E’s environmental goals.

The successful execution of this project demonstrates KC Group Shipping’s ability to deliver complex logistics solutions while prioritising sustainability. The combined road and rail transport method met Extreme E’s requirements and underscored our commitment to innovative and eco-friendly logistics practices.
